College Courtyard Blog

The College Courtyard Apartments now have a blog. Our new blog web address is collegecourtyard.blogspot.com. We will be posting the monthly newsletter and use the blog as a way of communicating important information. Please feel free to use the blog to tell us about activities at the University or in the College Courtyard community.

Street Parking

If you park on Seminary Street, remember to pick up your new street parking permit from the office. The permits issued at the beginning of the fall semester expired on December 31, 2007. We don’t want to you get a ticket so please stop by the office and get your new permit.

Watch Your Step

During the winter months we make every effort to keep the sidewalks and stairs free of snow and ice. Never the less, please use caution after a storm. Use the handrails on the stairs and step carefully when on the sidewalk to the north of the building as it is steep and gets little sun.

Useless Fact: After being picked an orange cannot ripen.

Please Don’t Drink and Drive

Your safety is important to us. Please don’t drink and drive. If you drink alcohol (please be 21 years of age and older) get a designated driver or walk home. Don’t ruin your life with a DUI or worse, death of yourself or others. It’s not worth it.

Laundry Rooms Don’t Like Cold Weather

During the cold winter months it is important that the windows in the laundry rooms remain closed. Open windows may cause the pipes to freeze and cause considerable damage. This will force us to close the laundry rooms until they are repaired. None of us want that to happen so please be careful.

Useless Fact: Beijing boasts the world's largest Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant.

Need More Storage Space?

The College Courtyard has storage lockers available for rent for only $20 per month. The 4’ by 5’ lockers are located on the second and third floors. These storage lockers are a great place to store skis, bicycles, or camping equipment. See Rebecca for more information.

Useless Fact: The driest place on earth is Calama, in the Atacama Desert in Chile.

No Smoking

The College Courtyard Apartments are non-smoking student residences. Smoking is prohibited in the apartments, on the walkways, balconies and the courtyard. Guests entering the apartments with a cigarette may extinguish them in the urns by the front gate.

No Parking

The area in front of the dumpster is a no parking zone. Cars parked in the area in front of the dumpster are subject to towing. In addition, Reno Disposal writes down the license plate number of cars that block the dumpster and violators may have to pay for additional garbage pickups.

More Useless Facts: Canada has more inland waters and lakes than any other country in the world.

Vacuum

A vacuum is available for your use. If you wish to borrow our vacuum it can be checked out at the office. Please return the vacuum immediately after use, as other students may need to use it.

2008/2009 School Year

Residents wishing to stay at the College Courtyard after their current lease expires must inform Rebecca by March 1, 2008. If notice is not received by March 1st we will assume that you intend to vacate your apartment when your lease expires and we will begin the process of leasing it to new students.

Useless Fact: The three dots in Domino's pizza stand for the first three stores. They wanted to add a dot for each new store, but obviously that would be impossible since there are now over seven thousand stores.

Snacks Available

As you prepare for that exam does the grumble of your stomach keep you from concentrating? A quick snack can help you quell those hunger pangs. Snack and drink machines are available in the first floor laundry room. It’s quick, easy and convenient.

Useless Fact: Water expands 9% when it is frozen.

Watch the Gate

Please be very careful when driving through the garage gate. If the gate is going down, DO NOT try to slip under the gate. Once the gate begins to go down it will not stop if you press the button on the garage gate opener. It will only stop when it hits something and it could do considerable damage to both your car and the gate if this occurs. The gate is set to stay up an adequate amount of time for one car. You will be held responsible for any damage if the camera shows that you tried to slip through the gate inappropriately.

More Uselessness: In Alabama, it is against the law to wear a fake mustache that could cause laughter in the church.

Message from Jamie

The College Courtyard Apartments are gated for your protection. Some of you appear to be our “gatekeeper” as you continually open the gate for anyone and everyone. This is dangerous and a violation of your lease. By opening the gate to strangers you are accepting liability for any damage or injury that occurs on the property or to our residents. Guests can “buzz” for entrance and only the resident should make the decision as to whether they want that person to enter the complex. There is always the chance that the resident is not home and then we have strangers roaming about the building. Please do not open the gate for strangers and do not let strangers enter through the gate as you enter or exit the building.

Watch Your Step

As winter arrives we must be ready for inclement weather and especially snowstorms. Please be careful and watch your step if a snowstorm should occur. We shovel snow and sand the sidewalks and steps after every storm but you should be cautious never the less. Useless Fact: The dot that appears over the letter "i" is called a tittle.

Please Don’t Drink and Drive

Useless Fact: 1 out of 350,000 Americans get electrocuted in their life.

Message from Nicholas

The College Courtyard Apartments are gated for your protection. Lately we have noticed that some residents are propping open the front gate or handicap entrance door. This is dangerous and a violation of your lease. As you know, the entrances to this building are under video surveillance. For this reason we can identify the people who prop open the doors and gate. By propping open the gate you are accepting all liability for anything that may happen to the property, its residents and their guests. Opening the gate for strangers is also dangerous. We are sure you do not want to take on this liability so please never under any circumstances prop open the doors and gates or let in unknown people.

Loading Zone

Please be aware that the parking enforcement officers for the City of Reno will ticket cars that are parked in our loading zone for long periods of time. This ticketing will be done regardless of whether or not the car has a Seminary Avenue parking permit. This strict parking enforcement is being done at the request of the Postal Carriers, as they do not like restricted access to the building. All residents of the College Courtyard Apartments should appreciate this enforcement as it allows a convenient loading and unloading area for you, family and friends.

Useless Fact: People generally read 25% slower from a computer screen compared to paper.

As you prepare for that exam or get home from a long day at work does the grumble of your stomach keep you from concentrating? A quick snack can help you quell those hunger pangs. Snack and drink machines are available in the first floor laundry room. It’s quick, easy and convenient.

No
Smoking

The College Courtyard Apartments are non-smoking student residences. Smoking is prohibited in the apartments, on the walkways, balconies and the courtyard. Guests entering the apartments with a cigarette may extinguish them in the urns by the front gate.

No Parking

The area in front of the dumpster is a no parking zone. Cars parked in the area in front of the dumpster are subject to towing. In addition, Reno Disposal writes down the license plate number of cars that block the dumpster and violators may have to pay for additional garbage pickups.

More Useless Tiger Woods' real first name is Eldrick. His father gave him the nickname "Tiger" in honor of a South Vietnamese soldier his father had fought alongside with during the Vietnam War.

Useless Fact: The "naked recreation and travel" industry has grown by 233% in the past decade.

Look Both Ways

It is very important that all of you be careful when crossing Sierra Street. Even though the crosswalk is well marked many drivers are speeding or not paying attention to pedestrians. We are working with the City of Reno and we hope that a traffic light can be installed in the near future.

Laundry Rooms

Please be considerate of your neighbors and do not leave your clothes in the washers or dryers unattended after the washing and drying cycle.

Thank you for stopping by the office to introduce yourself. As I collected February’s rent it was good to put faces to the names of our residents. Now that the garage-parking situation has been resolved I am happy to report the Visitor Parking program will be reinstated. To receive a Visitor Parking pass for 24 hours, you will leave a cash deposit of $20.00, which will be returned to you when the placard is returned.

Be a Good Neighbor

The goal of all of the residents of the College Courtyard Apartments is to achieve a quality education at the University of Nevada. An atmosphere that is conducive for studying is imperative. Please be considerate of your roommates and neighbors and keep noise to a minimum. We will not tolerate loud parties on the Courtyard or in the apartments and will take appropriate action against those residents who violate the noise rules.

Watch Your Step

During the winter months we make every effort to keep the sidewalks and stairs free of snow and ice. Never the less, please use caution after a storm. Use the handrails on the stairs and step carefully when on the sidewalk to the north of the building as it is steep and gets little sun. Hopefully spring is on its way!

Meet Nicholas-Martin

College Courtyard Apartments new Manager is Nicholas-Martin Kearney. He recently relocated from Indianapolis where he managed a professional ballet company taking them on tour nationally and to China & Japan. His relocation to Reno is the successful culmination of an 11-year search for his birth family that has been living in the Reno/Sparks area for 40 years. He teaches Mindful Movements, a simple exercise program that focuses on the body-mind-spirit connection. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of A Rainbow Place, a community center that serves the GLBT community in Northern Nevada.

Visitor Parking

Beginning February 1, College Courtyard Apartments will no longer provide visitor parking passes for your overnight guests. Please direct your overnight guests to Oak Street (just south of 11th/Seminary) where they may park with no zone permit.
Those passes that have been issued already will need to be returned to the office ASAP to avoid incurring a fee. This decision was not easily made; many conversations between the owners and management took place. We regret any inconvenience this may pose for those residents who have not abused the privilege.
